Emancipatory Dialogues
Magid Shihade on Studying Ibn Khaldun to Produce an Alternative Knowledge
{{langos=='en'?('15/03/2023' | todate):('15/03/2023' | artodate)}} - Issue 10.1

In his article "Education and anti-colonialism: about not reading Ibn Khaldun in Palestine", Prof. Magid Shihade addresses the problems and repercussions of the globalization of knowledge. Shihade begins this conversation by sharing his academic experience, which raised questions about the goals and results of social science curricula, the type of questions and research methods used in Palestine on the one hand, and teaching methods on the other hand. Thus, Shihade raises the importance of reading Ibn Khaldun and other ancient texts accurately and in a modern manner commensurate with the times, with the aim of change and not copying and reproducing Western knowledge based on colonial thought. Believing that knowledge, or at least not all knowledge, can be applied in the whole world and not to all issues of importance to all societies, Shehadeh discusses the "alternative" question.

In this context, he presents some examples of existing projects and initiatives, and stresses the importance of forming a Palestinian knowledge cooperative based on the experience of the Al-Taba'i School and other currents. In addition, Shihade raises other challenges and problems with regard to knowledge production in Palestine, including: the existing tension between theory and practice, and the need to address dilemmas within society on the one hand, and linking the Palestinian issue with various global issues on the other hand.
